VoucherHost LLC is committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, including landlords, tenants, housing staff, and researchers with disabilities. We believe public housing data should be usable by everyone.
Measures we take
- Semantic HTML landmarks (
<nav>,<main>,<footer>) and descriptive heading structure. - Color contrast of at least 4.5:1 for body text and 3:1 for large text and UI controls.
- Keyboard-reachable interactive elements with visible focus states.
- Alt text on all meaningful images; decorative images marked as such.
- Form inputs paired with
<label>elements; error messages tied to inputs via ARIA. - Sticky headers sized to avoid covering focused elements.
- Respect for
prefers-reduced-motionin animated transitions.
Known limitations
We are actively improving the following areas:
- Interactive maps: Leaflet maps have keyboard controls, but PHA marker popups may not read back perfectly in all screen readers. A tabular alternative is provided beneath every map.
- Historical trend charts: We are adding a "data table" toggle beneath each chart so the underlying values are readable by assistive tech.
- PDF data sources: Some linked PHA source documents are scanned PDFs that are not fully text-searchable. These are provided for verification only — the normalized numbers on our pages remain fully accessible.
Assistive technology tested
We test with NVDA (Firefox) on Windows, VoiceOver (Safari) on macOS and iOS, and TalkBack on Android. We also validate with keyboard-only navigation and browser zoom up to 200%.
